History & links
Charles E. Fair was admitted as a solicitor in 1893. From 1901 his address was Northgate Street, Athlone which is -to this day- one of the offices of Fair & Murtagh in Athlone. Records indicate that Fair's father, James William Fair, also practised in Athlone from 1855 until his death in 1891 and there was most probably a continuity between the two practices. In 1917, Charles E. Fair ceased to practise as he had been appointed Town Clerk of the Crown and Peace for County Westmeath.
Patrick V.C. Murtagh acquired his firm, and remained in Northgate Street under the name Fair & Murtagh, Solicitors.
Over the years the firm has grown to become what is now one of the largest law firms in provincial Ireland. Particular growth in recent years has seen the number of solicitors rise to 11 and the advent of legal executives and other professional support staff -all to improve client service. Fair & Murtagh now consists of four partners, thirteen solicitors, several law clerks and legal executives, an accountant and a full team of administrative staff. In addition to their Athlone offices, the firm also has offices in Ballinasloe, Moate and Mountbellew
